Overview of the Churches
1. All messages go to the angel of the church from the Lord Jesus describing him using various names, most already identified in Ch.1.
2. Praise for that which is has been done well.
3. Correction/Rebuke
4. Ending says He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit sayeth unto the churches. To him that overcometh (fixes problems identified in #3) I will give….
With this patter identified we know how the Lord is dealing with various branches of his church. We can use the same pattern in our correction of churches, members, our families, and our fellow man in general. Remember God’s talk with Cain we are our brothers keepers. Genesis 4:9-14.
v2-3 The Ephesians are a great people who have substantial faith and good works. They are very cautious to try everyone to ensure the correct doctrine is taught among them. They also understand enduring suffering for the kingdom.
v4-5 It says they left their first love, which I assume is spreading the Gospel. The church members in Ephesus were known for their zeal in preaching the word, which is not mentioned here, thus the assumption that it was the first love that was left.
v7 If they overcome they will be given to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Smyrna
v9-10 People there are poor, some Jews follow Satan, some have been thrown into prison and will be killed. 10 days is probably not literal as much as ten was a substantial number the smallest number used to organize when in companies in the wilderness and when Jesus fed the five thousand.
v11 “He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.” Great contrast to the first death that will be suffered by those thrown into prison, the Lord God can break the bands of the second death also for those who are faithful.
