What Christmas really means

by mike on December 20, 2009

In honor of the gifts the wise men offered to the young boy Christ, we give often give gifts, however most of us are far to caught up in the stuff that goes along with Christmas to see the Stable. Our extravagance in decorating goes far beyond the simplicity of the stable. Like the young rich man are we maybe going away sorrowful because we are unable to give up our riches and follow him. More Christmas lights isn’t necessarily better, more presents isn’t better, a bigger tree, or more ornaments, doesn’t satiate our need for celebrating. At this season more than any other we become more like Martha, troubled about by many things. I believe we should try a little less this year. Less stuff, less time preparing, less ornate decorating, less shopping. I believe that this year less will be more, more meaningful sharing of love, more time to celebrate the birth of our Lord, more simplicity to remember the stable, and more money left to give to the poor. May we come to the manger individually in thought to pay our humble respects this year.
