Repetition is the Key to Memorization

by mike on January 20, 2010

Probably, the most common and best method to memorize scripture is repetition. I’ve found that I can learn it fastest with someone else prompting me. After a brief run through, I will begin and each time I can’t come up with the word I get prompted. Be sure to not get too much help, a letter or syllable is better than a phrase. If you make a mistake the prompter needs to correct you immediately and you need to re-say correctly what you said incorrectly to keep the correct way in your mind. Be sure to have the prompter let you struggle, and not prompt you too quickly, which doesn’t let your mind remember or struggle to come up with the correct word. After you have it down then say it to your self every hour for 2 days. I set an alarm that alerts me and I go over my daily memorization. Then every morning review all that you have memorized for the last 2 weeks, and finally every other month review all verses from the last 12 months. This is the best way to ensure it makes it into your long term memory. In this manner with less than 15 min daily, and 2 hrs every other month you can memorize 350 + verses a year. Some verses are longer and will take a couple of days in the prompting stage, but if you trade off prompting someone and you are both learning the same verses, you get extra repetition in your mind when you follow along. You can do it with a spouse or sibling right after family prayer, make it fun!
